I Found Out My Best Friend Likes Me

I always thought our friendship was safe — stable, uncomplicated. We’ve known each other for years, so long that our families practically see us as siblings. But everything changed the day I overheard him talking to someone else.

He didn’t know I was coming back to get my phone.
He didn’t know I heard the words:
“Bro, I can’t even date anyone else. I like her too much.”

At first I froze. Then I felt something shift in my chest — something I wasn’t prepared for. I always assumed we were just close. I never considered anything deeper. But suddenly, every moment between us took a new meaning: the way he always walks me home, how he notices when I’m quiet, the way he looks at me when he thinks I’m not paying attention.

Since that day, I’ve become hyper-aware of everything.
When he laughs.
When he touches my shoulder.
When he says, “You know I got you.”

I don’t know what scares me more — the idea that he likes me, or the possibility that I might like him back.
Because if we try something and fail…
I don’t know if our friendship can survive it.
